Synthesia reaches a $2 billion valuation - London-based AI startup Synthesia has reached a valuation of $2.1 billion, marking a significant step in its bid to compete with global leaders in the development of generative AI applications and tools.
Synthesia reaches a $2 billion valuation
The company, known for its AI-driven creation of realistic human-like video avatars, announced on Wednesday that it secured $180 million in a new funding round led by US venture capital firm NEA. The round also saw participation from existing investors, including Google Ventures and Accel Partners, alongside previous backer Nvidia.
"We have a branding challenge in the UK, and the government could help by promoting that we are open for business and avoiding excessive regulation or tax changes," commented Riparbelli.
Founded in 2017, Synthesia employs 400 people across its offices in London, New York, and various European locations. The company specializes in proprietary AI models that create text-prompted avatars capable of delivering realistic speech in video form. The newly acquired funds will be used to enhance the lifelike quality of these avatars, particularly for corporate communication purposes.
Riparbelli added, "There's much work to be done to make these avatars more natural and photorealistic, such as enabling them to interact with objects and communicate with each other in shared spaces."
"Our focus remains on developing human dialogue through video content, prioritizing practical applications like marketing video presenters over more whimsical creations like a skateboarding dog at the beach," he concluded.
